Rules
Which One Must Observe In Fencing Academies
Know

• That on entering in the fencing hall, to bare one's head.
• Not to speak on politics or religious matters in the fencing hall.
• Not to swear.
• Not to speak or sing indecently.
• Not to chatter, knowing that the consequences are ordinarily offensive.
• Not to jeer at anyone who makes a mistake.
• Not to throw the weapon in the fencing hall.
• Not to fence without being gloved and masked.
• Not to leave weapon lying around in corners.
• Not to disturb those who are fencing.
• Not to drag the weapon point on the floor.
• That one must be polite to presented guests who come in the hall, and not to offer them weapons except with the agreement permission of the Master.
• That weapons that become broken will be put on the account of the student who gave them to his guest for fencing.
• That weapons broken by students of the same hall will be paid by him in whose hand the broken weapon rests.
• That when fencing, when one makes the weapon of his adversary fall, it is necessary to pick it up promptly and return it to his hand with politeness.
• That if, unfortunately, in fencing, one hits his opponent on the face (mask), he who made the hit must show civility and propriety to the other.
• That students partake of fencing lessons without interruption, it being a most serious endeavour.
• That the student must pay for the weapon he breaks, while he practices with the Master or with the Prevost of the hall.
• That it is honorable to pay regularly the required fee.
• That absolute silence is required to be observed by the students during the Master's lesson or those of the Prevost.
• That the most sympathy and the greatest courtesy and respect must be observed by the students of the same fencing hall.
• That it is absolutely forbidden to touch any weapons in the absence of the Master.
• That it is absolutely forbidden for students to present themselves in the fencing hall in disrespectful attire, slovenly, or indecently.
• That it is absolutely forbidden to fence without fencing jacket, plastron, and without being masked and gloved.
• That it is absolutely forbidden to fence with a pointed weapon.
• That when fencing, when one blade becomes broken, the students must immediately stop the action.
• That while fencing, if an action or bout is not convenient or is distasteful, it is necessary to find a believable pretext to cease the bout.
• That it is forbidden to take your neighbour's weapon or imitate his fencing style without his consent.
• That it is absolutely forbidden to touch or menace a person who is without a mask, knowing that the effects of this are always very dangerous.
• That it is forbidden to touch suits of armour or crests.
• That it is forbidden to use the unarmed hand while fencing.
• That it is necessary to be honorable to the weapon.
• That it is necessary to have complete respect for the Master and the Prevost.
